You’ve been consistent for months: easy runs feel easy, long runs are reliable, and the work is there. Still, your race times won’t budge. Your 10K pace hasn’t improved in half a year. Every threshold effort hits the same invisible wall at the same moment.
That wall is your lactate threshold, and it isn’t a permanent limit. It’s a trainable physiological boundary. Raise it, and the pace that felt impossible becomes sustainable. Ignore it, and mileage alone won’t break the plateau.

How to Find Your Lactate Threshold Without a Lab Test

Run as hard as you can sustain for 30 minutes on a flat road or track, not an all-out sprint, but a hard, controlled effort you could theoretically hold for a race. Your average pace for the final 20 minutes of that effort is a solid approximation of your LT2 pace.
Record your average heart rate for those final 20 minutes too. That heart rate becomes your LT heart rate — useful for prescribing future workouts when pace alone doesn't account for heat, hills, or fatigue.
The Talk Test
Lower-tech, but surprisingly accurate for LT1: run progressively faster in 2-minute increments. LT1 is approximately the pace at which you can still speak in full sentences but wouldn't want to hold a long conversation. It's the shift from "conversational" to "controlled breathing required." LT2 is reached when you can manage only a few words between breaths.
Use Race Pace Data
If you've raced recently, your threshold pace correlates fairly well with specific race paces:
5K race pace + 25–35 seconds per mile ≈ LT2 threshold pace
10K race pace + 10–20 seconds per mile ≈ LT2 threshold pace

One of my favourites is the 30-45-60 in pyramid workout. Three sets of 30,45,60 seconds at threshold pace or faster with just 15 seconds rest. The intervals are short and do not put that much stress on the body, but the rest is also short enough to get that training stimulus that we need.
